Meadow Lake set to host a Diwali celebration in November

Oct 24, 2019 | 1:09 PM

Residents in Meadow Lake are preparing to celebrate Diwali.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Meadow Lake Senior Citizen Activity Centre will host a Diwali celebration.

Diwali is a four to five-day long festival of lights, which is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists every autumn. It is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Sayontika Das, an organizer for the event, said Diwali provides a great opportunity for everyone to come and experience a bit of their culture.

“We are bringing together the East Asian community as well as opening our doors to the rest of the local community [so they can see] what we usually celebrate this time of year, which coincides with Thanksgiving and Halloween,” she said.

Das said they have planned an evening full of activities for everyone to enjoy.

“There is going to be the rangoli, lighting, traditional food and a cultural presentation and dance. In addition to that, there will be traditional music and we will definitely be doing our prayer so we can do our prayer together,” she said.

Das said that events like this one are very important to places like Meadow Lake to help foster a sense of community.

“It is important to represent the growing demographic of different ethnicities in a small community like Meadow Lake. We all know each other from work, or see each other every day. It is very important to have that chance to show our roots and share with others the stories we bring from our home far away to the place we call home now,” she said.

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on November 2. Tickets will be $5 and available at the door.
