Levesque wins vacant council seat

Meadow Lake city council byelection results are in and the former administrator and interim city manager Richard Levesque is filling the vacant seat.

Levesque garnered 198 votes, Anthony Vandenburg, 82 and Richard Watson, 27. Cheryl Dodds, acting city clerk said one vote was rejected because the ballot was unreadable.

“I’ve always had an interest in municipal politics and I care about my community, and how it’s developed,” Levesque said.

The newly-elected councillor said Meadow Lake could step up in its maintenance of sidewalks, streets and parks. He also expressed concerns about filling empty commercial buildings along the highway and maintaining the city’s current assets.

“There is a push to build a multiuse facility which may be a good idea but I think we need more details before we can get to immerse in whether we’re going to start taxing people to cover the cost of building it,” he said.

Levesque said his immediate plans are to get up to speed with the budget before making any major decisions. For now, he’s focused on maintaining the city’s current assets.

Levesque ran for mayor in June. He will take his seat as city councillor on Monday.

Editor’s note: this story was amended to make clear Levesque is not part of the push to build a multiuse facility.
