Affordable Housing in Meadow Lake could be solved by waitlists

Dec 11, 2019 | 2:47 PM

Meadow Lake has an ongoing affordable housing shortage.

Kids First supports 85 families in the City of Meadow Lake and administrative assistant Lesley Rolfe said a shortage in affordable and acceptable housing is still prevalent. She is encouraging anyone in Meadow Lake, regardless of income, to apply to an affordable housing waitlist.

“What we’re trying to educate our families about is get your name on a waiting list and when your turn comes up they’ll call you but the other side of that, is if you’re not on a waitlist, then it doesn’t show that there’s a need or a backlog for housing,” Rolfe told meadowlakeNOW.

“If we get everyone who is looking for housing to actually to sign up and put their name on a waiting list then the list grows and we can actually show that the need is there and someone can push forward to get more housing.”

Rolfe said Kids First was involved in creating awareness about the availability of suitable housing in the city a few years back. She added people come through her doors in search of resources because Meadow Lake Housing Authority or Native Urban Housing Corp. wait lists are full.

“We have a lot of families that are transient. So, people will leave and come back to the community and need housing again. A lot of times there is not necessarily affordable or even acceptable living conditions,” she said.

Lauri Bell manages Meadow Lake Native Housing Corp. and said their waitlist can have up to 80 names. She said she has 14 seniors on the current waiting list and is also in need of affordable housing for local seniors.

Meadow Lake Housing Authority said their current list of eligible family applicants is sitting at five.
