Twin Fiddles bring back a night of traditional music

Twin Fiddles are back in Meadow Lake for old-time traditional fiddling and square dance.

Award winning fiddlers JJ Guy and Gordon Stobbe work together throughout the Canadian West teaching workshops, mentoring youth, performing and composing music. The group will stop by Carpenter High School for a limited number of performances.

Event coordinator and music teacher Lucas Welsh says Twin Fiddle performances are all part of an ongoing attempt to bring traditional music to Meadow Lake.

“You’re going to hear traditional fiddle with new tunes. There’s going to be lots of harmony fiddle which is kind of a rare thing to hear in a live show these days,” Welsh told meadowlakeNOW.

Welsh said JJ and Gordon travel all over Canada and perform and teach at a number of seminars for youth and adults.

“These guys are really the cream of the crop in their field…Gordon Stobbe received the Order of Canada for the work he’s done in fiddling across the country. JJ Guy is in an award winning fiddler from right here in Saskatchewan and they’ve also got Cathy Sproule coming and she’s going to accompany them on the piano this round,” Welsh said. “There’s going to be lots of laughs and lots of great music that will take us across the country.”

Twin Fiddles will engage with elementary school students before offering one performance to the public.

The group’s only public performance is on Tuesday Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Carpenter High School Auditorium.

Tickets are $20 and children under 12 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the Meadow Lake Library or at Carpenter High School doors on the night of the performance.
