Slippery conditions persist

Conditions favourable for slick roads for much of the week

The mild conditions will stay with us for several days, but so too will the slippery conditions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW the milder air is coming in contact with the colder ground, and that in part is leading to low-level moisture.

“With the low-level moisture, we tend to get a lot of mist and fog, and with that we tend to get that rime icing that we’re seeing that’s attaching itself to trees and to the road,” Lang said. “That can really produce some slippery conditions and some tricky driving.”

She said the tiny droplets of water that have recently been falling off-and-on freeze on contact with trees, roads, and vehicles, leading to slippery conditions.

There was also freezing rain across much of the province, affecting areas from Meadow Lake through central Saskatchewan on the weekend.

The warm, moist conditions are expected to last most of the week, and there are a few weather systems that could affect conditions in the province. Lang said the one system is expected to arrive on Thursday.

“That should bring some wind with it and some much milder temperatures, so we may even see temperatures above the freezing mark,” Lang said.

That warm weather should help melt some of the frost lingering in the region, but Lang said the conditions will soon turn colder, which could lead to more ice on the roads.

She recommended checking the Highway Hotline before travelling this week.

A return to much colder air is expected after the coming weekend.
