Carpenter High School curling teams gearing up for provincial championships this weekend

Mar 5, 2020 | 1:17 PM

The Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Provincial Curling Championships are coming to Meadow Lake for the first time in four years.

Kendra Paramchuk, organizer and vice principal at Carpenter High School told meadowlakeNOW the Carpenter Boys curling team is hosting the top eight teams that came out of the regional curling championship.

“The boys are considered the host team, and teams coming here are top eight in the province, no matter what size of the school,” she said.

In 2016, Carpenter High School hosted the girls and mixed curling teams and the boys involved in the upcoming provincial championship, were the boys holding up signs at opening ceremonies back then.

“It’s come full circle for them,” Paramchuck said. “They were a part of the junior program in Meadow Lake and now are getting to spotlight their team in their home rink and getting a chance to host people in the North.”

Opening ceremonies begin on Friday at 3 p.m. The boys will play Foam Lake at 11 a.m. before the ceremony with an additional game at 7 p.m. Players will find out who they’re up against after their first game.

“It’s exciting for us to host the event and show off our community and we look forward to all the teams coming to the North and competing this weekend,” Paramchuk said.

Provincial Curling Championships will be held March 6 and 7 at Carpenter High School in Meadow Lake. Allan Composite School will host the girls championship, and Spiritwood High School will host the mixed championship on behalf of the SHSAA.

Each of championships will consist of round-robin pool-play leading to a championship bracket to determine medalists.

The eight teams participating in each championship advanced through Regional Championships that were held the weekend of February 28 and 29 at various locations around the province.

Last year, the Carpenter High School boys curling team won the silver medal in the provincial championships.
