SGEU wants government to implement policy allowing employees to work from home

The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU) is calling on the provincial government to do more than to just consider a work-from-home policy.

According to a media release, Barry Nowoselsky, chairperson of the SGEU PS/GE bargaining unit, said the provincial government has dropped the ball protecting Sask. residents from COVID-19.

The Public Service Commission of Saskatchewan is in charge of implementing a remote work policy but the release states a draft was put on hold when the provincial election began.

“It’s time to implement this policy and allow workers to access it,” Nowoselsky said in the release. “Thousands of our members go to work every day — many of whom could be working from home to help decrease the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Our members are concerned that the government isn’t looking out for their best interests or the interests of Saskatchewan people.”

The SGEU explained in the release that Premier Scott Moe said in a recent media conference they would look at reviewing if their employees can resume working from home. The SGEU suggests there has been no consistency in directions from the government to work from home.

Nowoselsky added Moe needs to do more than just consider it and the government needs to practice what they preach.

“In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, many SGEU members worked from home, and demonstrated that they could perform their duties effectively from outside their workplaces,” the release stated. “COVID-19 numbers are now dramatically higher than they were at that time, but the province has so far required many of its employees to continue to report to work in their offices.”
