With COVID-19 case numbers in Saskatchewan on the rise, the provincial government is expected to add more new restrictions Wednesday.

Premier Scott Moe and Dr. Saqib Shahab, the province’s chief medical health officer, are to hold a media conference at 3 p.m.

Moe and Shahab were slated to provide an update Tuesday, but the media conference was postponed shortly before it was to begin.

In a media release announcing the postponement, the premier’s office suggested new restrictions would be coming.

“Further measures are under active consideration and development by Dr. Shahab and will be announced during (Wednesday’s) COVID-19 update with the Premier and the Chief Medical Health Officer,” the release said.

The government previously announced new restrictions on Nov. 17, including mandatory mask use in all indoor public places in the province and a five-person limit on private indoor gatherings. Those took effect last Thursday.

The number of new cases reported in the province has increased in recent weeks, with Saskatchewan twice setting new single-day highs for new cases (308 on Nov. 14, then 439 on Saturday).

There have been six deaths linked to COVID in the province over the past week and the number of hospitalizations has continued to rise. It stood at 105 on Tuesday.

A number of groups — including more than 400 Saskatchewan doctors, the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation — have called for stricter measures to curb the spread of the virus leading into the Christmas holiday.

The media conference Wednesday can be heard live here.
