Fifth death confirmed, maintaining health key for Wakaw long-term care home

There has been another death at Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw related to COVID-19.

Interim CEO Wayne Nogier confirmed it to northeastNOW on Monday. That makes a total of five deaths at the home since the outbreak began on Dec. 28. Since then, all 44 residents have tested positive, and upwards of 25 staff have tested positive with another 20 isolating with symptoms.

Nogier said they are now into phase two of their response to the outbreak.

“We’re really not preventing any further infection, with the exception of our well staff that are working and our people that the labour pool has put in,” he said. “So now we’re maintaining health.”

The home continues to parachute staff in from around the province to assist while staff deals with symptoms or positive tests.

Six residents have also been moved to area hospitals, according to Nogier. He said the reasoning behind that is to “level the load” for the staff that is there. He said there is also one resident in the ICU, leaving 32 residents at Lakeview Pioneer Lodge for the time being. Nogier said this makes it easier for staff to provide care and deal with symptoms of residents.

Contact also continues with family members of residents regarding conditions. Nogier said they began the outbreak with phone calls to families, but that created problems with the phones systems which saw 300 to 400 calls a day at times. Email has been the main avenue of contact, and Nogier believes it is working very well.

“I think the communication plan is genuine and is working,” Nogier said. “And we’re getting good feedback from families about that.”

He said they are sending out daily email updates to family, and then any changes including symptoms, or movement of residents, the families are contacted directly.
