Meadow Lake enters province-wide initiative to win $10,000

The Meadow Lake Parks and Recreation department has entered the city into a province-wide community initiative promoting outdoor physical activity.

Get Out and Play encourages residents across the province to engage in outdoor physical activities for a chance to win $10,000 for the communities recreational facilities. The program kicked off on March 1 and will run until the evening of March 10. Participating residents will log their physical activity minutes for their community to compete with other communities for the most minutes.

Parks and Recreation manager Regan Beck said if Meadow Lake wins the competition, the funding will be directed toward upgrading the lighting at Lions Park to make the park more accessible throughout the year.

“If we can really push forward on this, it’ll give us an opportunity to improve our Lion’s Park, one of the gems of Meadow Lake,” Beck said. “We want to make it more accessible all year round, and this is the challenge we have out there. Like I tell everyone else, worst case scenario, we all get out and are a little more active for 10 days in the winter months when some of us could really use it.”

To participate in the free event, residents will need to register themselves and their families at https://challenge.saskatchewaninmotion.ca/. Once that has been completed, all participants will go out and engage in physical activity. Families will then log their hours under Meadow Lake and they will be added to the community total.

Beck was excited to connect with local fitness centres and schools, who will be hosting their own events with clients and students to boost community numbers and increase the chance of winning the competition.

“We have a lot of support in town. Our local fitness centres, whether it be the spin gym, the crossfit gym, the regular gym, the dance studio, all of the gyms in town, are supportive of it and are running challenges for their own members. We’ve also reached out to all of the schools and they are going to be running challenges with the students as well.”

Residents are encouraged to share their progress and activity on social media to further promote the event to friends and family in the community. Anyone seeking more information or looking to register can do so at https://challenge.saskatchewaninmotion.ca/.
