Saskatchewan weather continues to fluctuate

Once again, drivers in northwest Saskatchewan will have to check the forecast before planning to travel this week.

A surprise burst of snow early on Tuesday came with a drop in temperature, more in line with the average daily high for this time of the year. Meteorologist Kyle Fougere said it was a small area of precipitation went over the area, with a more significant storm going through southern Saskatchewan.

“There could be some flurries later today, but we aren’t expecting any real significant accumulations in the area,” he said.

What residents can expect is further temperature falls in the next few days. North Battleford is predicted to have a high of -7 Celsius on Thursday, following an overnight low of -17 C. Meadow Lake is forecasted to hit -7 C by Wednesday, which precedes an overnight low of -18 C.

“There’s going to be a system that moves through tomorrow and will drag some colder air through the North,” Fougere said. “It’s going to get below normal for a few days.”

Following that period, there’s a strong chance of temperatures warming up again over the weekend, with the possibility of high’s around 6 C on Saturday. Fougere said the air will shift south and then push back north and because of these sudden shifts, there’s still a chance of precipitation.

“Spring is certainly a time with a lot of variability and often when you do see these changes, that is when we see the snow come down,” he said.

For those looking to take off their winter tires, Fougere said that may be premature and recommended that motorists pay attention to the forecast before making travel plans.

“It’s definitely on the early side now and we are expecting there to still be snow for March and likely into April.”
