A new face is joining the legal system in Meadow Lake.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced Judge Michael Tomka has been appointed to Meadow Lake Provincial Court. Throughout his career, Tomka has acquired an abundance of experience in civil litigation, insurance litigation and criminal law as a prosecutor and defence lawyer.

After receiving his law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1997, Tomka was called to the bar in 1998. From there he would take a position with Olive Waller Zinkhan & Waller, where he would eventually become a partner.

In a press release, Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said Tomka would make an excellent addition to the community of Meadow Lake and the provincial court.

“The breadth of his experience as a legal professional exemplifies the credentials we look for in a member of the judiciary, and I have no doubt he will serve our province well in his new capacity as judge,” Wyant said.

Tomka began working in the public sector in 2007 where he would oversee litigation and manage legal departments in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario for SGI. Between 2010 and 2012, Tomka worked as a Crown Prosecutor with Public Prosecutions. Tomka would return to private practice in 2018, joining law firm McKercher LLP.

He has also volunteered as a member of the Bar Judicial Council for the Canadian Bar Association, Saskatchewan Squash and the University of Regina Alumni Association.
