Northwest Fires July 21

Fire north of Dorintosh to continue receiving significant containment efforts

Jul 21, 2021 | 1:31 PM

Several communities affected by fires in the northwest part of Saskatchewan are still in need of crucial securing efforts.

Crews addressing the STRIKE fire north of Dorintosh have turned their attention to securing the line of the east side of the blaze while crawlers continue to cut a control line on the west side. The 3,200 hectare wildfire is within 20 km of Waterhen Lake First Nation and some southeast sections of Meadow Lake Provincial Park. The blaze is receiving containment efforts from type one and two crews, air support and heavy equipment.

The ongoing suppression work regarding the LOCK fire located west of Dillon has been concentrated on the north side of the fire. Crews are focusing on this area to protect the Village of St. George’s Hill, and heavy equipment crews are setting up cat guards around the villages. Type one, two and three crews, air support and Heavy Equipment Emergency Response Team members are on site working to suppress the 26,000+ hectare fire. This is the largest fire mentioned in the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s (SPSA) latest update.

The FORKS fire southwest of Beauval remains under control from emergency crews. The blaze is being monitored for any hot spots along the perimeter and within the contained area.

Since yesterday’s update, crews have reportedly managed to suppress two wildfires, bringing the current number of active fires in the province down to 167. Of those fires, 12 have been classified as contained, 25 are receiving efforts to protect nearby infrastructure and property, and 18 are still expected to increase in size. The remaining 112 wildfires are still being assessed by the SPSA.
