Heat wave returns to Saskatchewan, possible showers Monday

After a seemingly normal week of weather in Saskatchewan, there’s another heat wave here for the weekend.

Environment Canada has heat warnings in place throughout the northwest region, with temperatures rising to near and above 30 Celsius for the next few days. Meteorologist Terri Lang said the criteria for the region is slightly lower for a heat warning in this region of the province compared to the south, where an area needs to reach a high of 29 C and a low of 14 C.

“That has to last two days or have humidex values around 38 C in order for a heat warning to be issued,” she told battlefordsNOW. “It looks like those values will be reached.”

Both Meadow Lake and the Battlefords are hitting a high of 29 C today and will peak on Saturday at 34 C and 35 C respectively. Overnight lows will be around 15 C over the weekend.

Lang said they could start to see some smoke coming in by Sunday evening, as a new system pushes through from B.C. Temperatures will also cool down by Monday, with highs in the mid-20’s, and that cold air could also bring some thundershowers.

“We’ll probably see some pretty gusty winds as well, so those will mark the end of this particular heat wave,” Lang said.

While the wind will be strong Lang said it’s unlikely that the region will see heavy precipitation, given how fast the system is expected to move. For residents looking to enjoy the outdoors this weekend, she said the same precautions apply, with a particular focus on protecting elderly, children and animals from various illnesses from too much sun and dehydration.

“Especially kids, as they have trouble paying attention to being in the sun for that long,” she said.
