Showers expected to close out the weekend

As the weather continues to cool down in Saskatchewan, the northwest region of the province is expected to receive a mixed bag of conditions throughout the weekend.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Meadow Lake and the Battlefords are set to experience fluctuating conditions as a low pressure system passes through the region.

On Saturday, the area will notice a mixture of sun and clouds throughout the day, reaching a daytime high of nearly 18 Celsius before gradually cooling off in the evening and reaching a projected overnight low of 6 C.

There will be next to no chances of any historical temperature records being broken throughout the weekend. The record high for Sept. 11 currently sits at 26.6 C set back in 1981. While conditions may not be as warm as some would prefer, they will be warmer than the overnight low record of -1.5 C set in 1988.

Meteorologist Robyn Dyck explained the region is in a pattern bringing on a cold front that will have most of the area subjected to periods of rain throughout Sunday that are expected to last until Monday morning.

“In the upper atmosphere, we’re sort of right along the path of the jetstream. We are seeing over the next three to four days, a few different little ripples,” she said.

“Not super strong systems, but we’re just right in the path of the system’s tracks, so that does make for some variation.”

There is a 60 per cent chance of showers on Sunday that is expected to reach the region at some point in the second half of the day. Those conditions are expected to last throughout the night before easing up on Monday morning.

Sunday is expected to reach a daytime high of 17 degrees and an overnight low of 7 C. In 2013, the all-time record high for Sept. 12 was set at a sizzling 28.2 C. On that night in 1993, temperatures would cool down to a frosty -2.8 C for the lowest recorded temperature in that day’s history.
