Oct 8, 2021 | 2:56 PM

The Government of Saskatchewan is reporting 576 new cases of COVID-19 and four deaths in the province.

The new cases in northern Saskatchewan are found in the Far North West (31), Far North Central (one), Far North East (21), North West (102), North Central (34), North East (15), and thirty-nine (39) new cases have pending residence information.

One Saskatchewan resident who tested positive out-of-province was added to the Saskatoon zone on Oct. 5.

In total, 4,692 cases are considered active and 65,601 cases are considered recovered.

In the province, more than one-fourth (29.9 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39. Nearly one in five (19.6 per cent) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged 12 years and older) were fully vaccinated.

A total of 343 individuals are hospitalized, including 272 inpatient hospitalizations and 71 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 343 patients, 261 (76 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

There are 741 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 who have died since the start of the pandemic, with a case fatality rate of 1.0 per cent.

The seven-day average of new COVID-19 case numbers is 461 (38.2 new cases per 100,000).

NITHA data

As of Oct. 7, there are 33 new cases to report today in NITHA communities.

Of the new cases, 18 (55 per cent) were unvaccinated, four (12 per cent) are partially vaccinated and 11 (33 per cent) were fully vaccinated.

There are 216 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities.

These cases are located in the Far North Central (Athabasca), six; Far North West, 67; Far North East, 93; North Central, 30; and North East, 20.

There are 5,979 cases (96 per cent) recovered, and eight people are hospitalized.

Athabasca Health Authority

The Athabasca Health Authority has reported eight active COVID-19 cases in the AHA region – seven in Fond-Du-Lac and One in Black Lake.

According to a media release, executive director of primary health care at AHA, Taiwo Olubanwo, said the number seems to be rising in FDL lately.

“It is important to also note that some cases (individuals who tested positive) are not disclosing their close contacts as such, we strongly recommend the community to be extremely cautious especially during the forthcoming long weekend,” he said in the release. “While the COVID-19 vaccine uptake is steadily increasing, it is noteworthy to say that soon Fond Du Lac although currently at 46 per cent, will hit 50 per cent uptake as they already surpass 60 per cent first dose. Black Lake, however, COVID-19 vaccine rate is sitting at 18 per cent whilst Camsell portage currently at 100 per cent continues to take the lead followed by Stony Rapids (87 per cent) and Uranium City (76 per cent) respectively.”

“While the provincial COVID-19 vaccine rate sits at 63 per cent, the far north-central region that AHA covers has 38 per cent of its population fully vaccinated. Although the rate in the AHA region spears low which is a concern, it is important to note that the number was quite low in the past couple of months, thus a jump in the rate has been recorded so far. We anticipate an increase in the number in the coming week given that some parastatals are now embracing the need for CoVID-19 vaccines. The local schools equally hold a critical key to an increased CoVID-19 vaccine rate in the AHA region.”
