COVID Rapid testing kits now available across northern Saskatchewan

Rapid testing kits for COVID-19 are finally available for the public across northern Saskatchewan.

The provincial government previously stated they would be handing out over 1.3 million kits to different organizations last week, however, many were delayed in receiving them.

The chambers of commerce in Prince Albert, Melfort, Nipawin, Meadow Lake, and North Battleford will be providing them for a couple of hours, two days a week.

North Battleford will be handing them out from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Thursday.

Meadow Lake on Monday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

P.A. on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nipawin will also be handing them out on these days but will start at 12 p.m. and go until 4 p.m.

Kits will be available in Melfort on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

None specified how many kits they received, though P.A.’s chamber claimed to have ‘several thousand’ and Meadow Lake’s stating they have ‘a lot.’

The Canalta Hotel in Melfort is also taking part in the program, providing kits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. As they are open 24/7, they plan on providing the kits outside the assigned hours.

As of 1 p.m. on Monday, they still had around 500 kits available.

The P.A. Fire Department will also be handing them out, Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Individuals can get them through a mail slot on the building’s west door as they remain closed to the public.

The fire department and the Canalta Hotel both said they don’t know how long it will take before getting more kits after their first shipment runs out.

All these locations currently have a limited supply and will hand them out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Only one kit will be given to a household at this time. None of these spots will be handing them out on Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, those who receive a positive test should call the province’s HealthLine at 811.

A healthcare professional will provide directions on masking, isolation, and arrange a time to get a test done at a Saskatchewan Health Authority COVID-19 testing centre.
