Meadow Lake City Council approves skate park location

Nov 9, 2021 | 3:10 PM

Throughout recent months, Meadow Lake City Council, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Meadow Lake Action Committee have undertaken the initial stages of developing a new community skate park.

The latest development on this front comes in the form of a location.

During Monday’s council meeting, the city agreed to approve the vacant space between diamond 4 and the track/football field in Lions Park as a suitable location for the new skate park to be constructed.

While a layout and concept of the park hasn’t become available, the announcement represents a key component to the continuing development of the new facility.

Coun. Tom Harrison mentioned he would have preferred to see a map depicting what a layout of the park would look like in the designated area. However, he believes the location will provide a sufficient home to the recreational hub.

“Based on the recommendation of the parks and recreation manager, and if the Lions Club made the suggestion or agreement, I would go with it,” he said.

Other members of council expressed some concerns regarding whether the location was too close to nearby residences and what kind of impact the facility would have on its surroundings.

Mayor Merlin Seymour stated if any concerns were to become apparent throughout the development, the city would still have an opportunity to make changes as needed.

“My only concern with that would be, like Richard [Levesque] mentioned, the drainage,” Seymour said.

“If something comes up and they look at whether it’s feasible or the proper place to put it. If it’s not because of drainage issues or some other issues, we can change it.”

The skate park planning is seeing progress made shortly after the city’s Parks and Recreation Department received a $40,000 sponsorship from Tolko Industries.

The funding breathes life into the project and provides Tolko Industries with some of the park’s naming rights.

Later this month, signage will be posted in the approved area indicating the future site of the Meadow Lake Action Park. The total cost of the project is estimated to cost between $300,000- $400,000.

Groundwork is expected to begin by 2023.
