Light snowfall, cold temperatures ahead in Meadow Lake, Battlefords

Winter is officially here to stay in the northwest.

A new weather system carrying the possibility of snow is currently making its way into Saskatchewan, with periods of flurries expected in areas like Lloydminster, the Battlefords and Meadow Lake.

In North Battleford, there was some freezing drizzle in the morning, and light snow is expected to fall between Monday evening and Tuesday evening.

Early Monday, the Battlefords, Unity, Maidstone and St. Walburg region were under a fog advisory. Conditions have improved since the morning when there was near zero visibility available, but meteorologist Terri Lang of Environment Canada told battlefordsNOW that the moisture from this fog is less than ideal when the road isn’t crystal clear.

“Those little droplets coming out of the fog can stay liquid until temperatures are -25,” she said. “It’s certainly an issue for roads and we’re going to get another system coming overnight.”

Lang said Battlefords residents shouldn’t expect more than two to four cm of snow, with Meadow Lake forecast for at least five cm. However, the timing of it is less than ideal.

“The concern is with the ice associated with the freezing drizzle and the fog,” she said. “And when you’re out on the highway, the fog can be pretty thick for visibility. There’s only about half a mile in the Battlefords.”

There’s a chance of flurries later in the week in both the Battlefords and Meadow Lake, as temperatures shoot down. Tuesday’s overnight low for both areas is around -23 C and afternoon highs are expected to stay below -20 C the rest of the week. The Battlefords coldest night of the week should be -29 C on Friday, with -31 C Thursday evening in Meadow Lake.

Heading into the holidays, residents can expect this trend to continue. Lang said the province has been spoiled by warmer temperatures and that the next week is in line with a normal winter.

“We’ve had a few days here and there, but it’s going to feel like winter moving forward,” she said. “The models are showing cold air is going to stick around for a long time.

“People are just going to have to get used to it and dress appropriately on those colder nights.”
