Winter weather ahead for holiday travel

Dec 23, 2021 | 11:31 AM

Driving conditions are increasingly less ideal ahead of Christmas Eve.

Highway Hotline is reporting winter conditions on nearly every road north and south of Highway 16 between Lloydminster and the Battlefords, with similar conditions north of Meadow Lake as well. That’s unlikely to change with more snowfall expected throughout the day.

The Battlefords may get between two to five centimetres of snow, while Meadow Lake is expecting at least 10 cm by tomorrow morning. All of this precipitation is coming down as temperatures drop overnight to lows averaging around -21 C.

In addition to the snowfall, wind is present throughout Saskatchewan, coming out of the southeast around 30 km/h. This is expected to continue Friday, which could result in wind chills in the -30 C range.

On Christmas Eve, conditions are expected to clear, with mainly sunny skies in most communities. The highs for the afternoon will be much chillier than previous weeks, with Meadow Lake forecast at -20 C and the Battlefords at -19 C. The two areas are both predicted for -23 C on the afternoon of Christmas Day.

Following Christmas weekend, daily highs are forecast for an average of -27 C. Extreme cold warnings are expected, per the requirement of temperature or wind chill reaching -30 C.
