Province announces 1,954 new cases of COVID-19 since Dec. 31

The Government of Saskatchewan has reported 1,954 new COVID-19 cases since its last report.

There were 623 on Dec. 31, 607 on Jan.1, 398 on Jan. 2, and 326 on Jan. 3.

The new cases were found in the Far North West (nine), Far North East (13), North West (44), North Central (89), North East (53), and 148 new cases have pending residence information.

There are 4,062 cases considered active and 82,145 cases are considered recovered.

Five new deaths were also reported since the Dec. 31 report for a total of 960 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died with a case fatality rate of 1.1 per cent.

One-half (50.2 per cent) of new cases are between the ages of 20 and 39 (this percentage is calculated based on the cumulative number of new cases from January 1 to 3).

Less than five per cent (4.8 per cent) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged five years and older) were fully vaccinated.

As of Jan. 4, a total of 95 people are in hospital; including 11 in ICU. Of the 95 patients, 49 (51.6 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

The province has announced public reporting distinguishing COVID-19 hospitalizations and hospitalizations where COVID-19 diagnosis followed hospitalization. That reporting mechanism is expected to be ready the week of Jan. 3.

There have been 1,339,499 COVID-19 tests performed in the province.

New Omicron results were reported for 171 new cases.

Of the total 1,992 probable cases, 42.5 per cent are in the Regina zone, 21.6 per cent are in the Saskatoon zone, and the remaining 715 cases (35.9 per cent) are spread across the remaining zones, with each zone has at least one probable Omicron case except Far North Central.

NITHA communities

As of Jan. 3, there are six new cases to report in NITHA communities.

Of the new cases, one (17 per cent) was not vaccinated; and five (83 per cent) were fully vaccinated.

There are 43 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities. These cases are found in the Far North Central (Athabasca), one; Far North West, six; and Far North East, 36.

There are 6,907 cases (99 per cent) recovered, and there are no hospitalizations.
