Province exceeds highest daily case count and current active case records with 913 new cases today

The provincial government is reporting 913 new cases of COVID-19 today and a current active case count of 5,235.

These are both the highest numbers seen in the province since the pandemic began.

Of the new cases reported today, 61 are located in northern zones of the province; the Far North West (six), Far North East (three), North West (24), North Central (14), North East (14).

One new death was also reported bringing the provincial total to 961 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 who have died since the beginning of the pandemic.

Almost one-half (46.1 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39 and 100 per cent of new cases are among unvaccinated individuals in the province.

Since Jan. 1, the new cases by vaccination status table has shown a significant number of new cases as unvaccinated. This data is under review to ensure that the reports are accurate.

As of Jan. 6, a total of 100 individuals are hospitalized, including 88 inpatient hospitalizations and 12 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 100 patients, 50 were not fully vaccinated.

NITHA numbers

The Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) reported eight new cases Wednesday in NITHA communities.

Of the new cases, two (24 per cent) are not vaccinated; one (13 per cent) was partially vaccinated; four (50 per cent) were fully vaccinated, and one (13 per cent) was ineligible for vaccination.

There are 53 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities. These cases are located in the Far North Central (Athabasca), one; Far North West, 10; Far North East, 42; North Central, 0; and North East, 0. There have been 6,907 cases (99 per cent) that have recovered, and there are 0 hospitalizations.

Athabasca Health Authority

Athabasca Health Authority (AHA) continues to report no new or active COVID-19 cases. However, Taiwo Olubanwo, AHA executive director of Primary Health Care continues to encourage people to get their vaccinations.
