Extreme cold warnings blanket Saskatchewan

Feb 22, 2022 | 9:02 AM

Bone-chilling temperatures are expected to persist around Saskatchewan as a bitterly cold arctic air mass covers the province.

Frigid conditions are expected to last until Friday, with wind chill values of -40 C to -45 C expected on Tuesday throughout the day, before returning in the evening.

The cold conditions have prompted Environment Canada to issue an extreme cold warning for the entire province, except for the southwest corner consisting of the Leader, Gull Lake, Maple Creek and Shaunavon areas.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.
