Snowfall covers several regions, travel not advised

The blanket of snowfall has hit the Battlefords and beyond.

Around five centimetres precipitation fell overnight, with larger amounts to the south where the heart of the low pressure system is moving. As a result, driving conditions have been poor between snow on the road and low visibility.

In North Battleford, an accident occurred at the intersection of 100th Street and 13th Avenue. According to the RCMP the collision was serious and the road was cleared swiftly.

Snowfall warnings remain in effect in several regions with communities like Cut Knife, Maidstone, Wilkie, Glaslyn and Biggar all under the same advisory as the Battlefords. Total snowfall in the current weather corridor, following a rough line from Lloydminster to North Battleford, is in the range of 10-15 cm. Areas outside of that will also get at least five to 10 cm.

To the north, Meadow Lake and other communities are expected to avoid this system, though there is an outside chance of some flurries. Cloud cover will clear overnight and become mainly sunny on Saturday.

Several municipalities have put out warnings regarding driving conditions, warning motorists to stay home if possible and to monitor all alerts related to travel. First responders and snow removal crews will be working or standing by throughout the day.

Periods of snow are still expected overnight in the Battlefords region which could add up to two or three cm before things start to clear. A mixture of clouds and sunlight are ahead over the weekend with a high of 1 Celsius throughout the northwest on Monday.

Residents in municipalities like Battleford should expect some streets in residential neighbourhoods not to be cleared until next week. For anyone looking to travel, go to Highway Hotline.
