Snowfall to stick around in the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

Winter isn’t done with Saskatchewan just yet.

Below average temperatures are expected all week, as the southeast corner of the province braces for what will likely be a record breaking storm. Several areas are being warned to stock up on supplies ahead of 30-50 cm of snow falling, with winds gusting at around 90 km/h.

“If anyone is thinking about traveling towards the east on Wednesday or Thursday, they might want to rethink that,” Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said.

Fortunately for the Battlefords, Meadow Lake and other areas in the northwest, this system will not be swinging through with the same impact. However, residents can still expect some precipitation, strong winds and cool temperatures throughout the week.

“Maybe a little light snow, not much accumulation, not much in the way of wind either,” Lang said.

Following a high of -4 Celsius today, the Battlefords will stay around -5 C for two days, before warming to 0 C on Thursday and 1 C on Friday. In Meadow Lake, today’s high of -5 C will be the average for a few days, before rising to -2 C on Thursday and Friday. Both areas should see the sky dominated by cloudy conditions and have evening lows of around -11 C.

Being further south in the province, the Battlefords and communities like Wilkie and Unity may see flurries continue through overnight. Road advisories may be in place for winter conditions and low visibility.

Lang said because the following week of temperatures are well below seasonal averages (11 C/-2 C), residents in the area can expect to keep seeing snow outside.

“Even though it wasn’t much, it won’t be going anywhere, at least for the next couple days,” she said. “We’ll have to wait towards the weekend before things smarten up a bit.”

Looking ahead at the weekend, the Battlefords are predicted to get back to 5 C by Sunday, with Meadow Lake around 2 C by then. Skies are also expected clear, which will see some melting occur.

When asked about the possibility of this being the last gasp of winter, Lang was dismissive of any chance that temperatures would see a rapid improvement. She noted that this spring is expected to feature temperatures that are well below seasonal averages and that there’s a possibility of another weather system coming through next week that will bring another batch of snow.

“I’m always a wait till the end of April, early May before thinking of taking off the snow tires type-of-gal,” she said.
