‘Looks like another active day’: Low-pressure system moving into Saskatchewan after stormy weekend

Jul 18, 2022 | 9:02 AM

Environment Canada says more thunderstorms could be a possibility throughout Saskatchewan on Monday.

Meteorologist Chris Stammers says the conditions could be ripe for some systems to develop.

“It looks like another active day today (Monday) as we have another low-pressure system coming out of Montana,” he said. “That’s kind of been the general track of the storms for the last bit.”

There has been no shortage of intense conditions throughout the province lately.

Large hail, heavy rain and at least one tornado touched down in parts of Saskatchewan on Friday.

On Sunday, it was much of the same, with golf-ball-sized hail, over an inch of rain in places, as well as a possible tornado touchdown near Radville, roughly 50 kilometres southwest of Weyburn.

“We have an unconfirmed one (tornado) right near Radville, we did get a picture of what looks to be a tornado. But we’ll work on confirming that later today (Monday),” Stammers said. “But as of right now, it looks like it touched down.”

Stammers says multiple storms were making their way around the province on Sunday.

“There was a lot of alerts going off across the province,” he said. “Overall, it was a very active severe weather day over the prairies.

“It wasn’t super widespread, because we’re just talking about two or three storms, but they were particularly long-lived.”

The conditions caused some stress for people attending Craven Country Thunder, cancelling one act before delaying Blake Shelton’s headlining performance.

Thankfully for everyone in attendance at Craven, the system passed relatively quickly and Shelton was able to perform.
