Heat warnings issued for the Battlefords, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake

August long is starting off on a scorching note.

Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for northwest Saskatchewan amid high temperatures hitting the entire region. A heat warning stems from the humidex reaching over 30 Celsius.

Daytime highs are expected to exceed that temperature, though a cold front crossing the region on Friday may bring some relief through slightly cooler temperatures.

The Battlefords, Lloydminster and Meadow Lake are among the many communities affected. On Friday, the Battlefords is expected to peak at 34 C in the early afternoon, with a chance of showers overnight that could lead into Saturday, where the high could be 28 C. Afternoon temperatures for the next two days should be 27 C and 25 C.

In Meadow Lake, Friday high is predicted as 30 C, the following three days in the low 20 C’s amid steady cloud cover. The Border City’s forecast has a similar projection to the Battlefords.

Given the heat expected for the weekend, Environment Canada is advising residents to watch for signs of heat stroke and other heat-related ailments. Elderly people, children and individuals with chronic illnesses are at higher risk, aside from those working or exercising outdoors.
