Meadow Lake RCMP bring back charity golf tournament

Aug 4, 2022 | 5:18 PM

Local law enforcement will be hitting the links in Meadow Lake.

The RCMP detachment is hosting its annual charity golf tournament on Saturday at the Meadow Lake Golf Course, with teams of four able to register.

Cst. Mitch McMurphy said this tournament is coming up on shorter notice than what they’d like, but added that it’s exciting for the detachment to get the event rolling again. This will be the first large event for the police in Meadow Lake since the start of the pandemic.

“We did Tim Horton’s Camp Day and things like that where we’re invited, but we haven’t had an event like this since,” he said. “We had to take a hiatus as we couldn’t organize it within the parameters of COVID-19 restrictions.”

“Everyone is so busy now as well, coming out of restrictions and making future plans. A good thing in order to get away for the weekend, so hopefully the weather is nice.”

The tournament run for several years in the city, in support of local non-profits. This year’s event will raise money for Multiworks Vocational Training Corporation, which McMurphy said will ultimately support many people in Meadow Lake.

“They’re all encompassing, helping older folk and young kids with places to live, jobs,” he said. “They help the less privileged, those facing social issues and a lot more.”

The main sponsorships include Meadow Lake Dodge, Eagle Creek GM, PineRidge ford and Meadow Lake Power and Equipment, in addition to numerous other local businesses and groups lending support. McMurphy said it’s huge to have this support during tough economic times.

“That all these local people are reaching out to us is definitely helpful, for sure,” he said.

According to McMurphy, there’s no specific monetary amount they want to raise, rather that that the RCMP are simply focusing on making sure it’s a fun event that will raise money for a good cause. He added that they’re always trying to have some kind of community event for kids and adults.

We’ve done a lot with Lions Park, we’ve had bike rodeos,” he said. “We’ve given out bike helmets to promote safety. For this year, the bulk is going to Multiworks just to help the adult population when it comes to social issues.”

And McMurphy acknowledged the added benefit is that officers continue cultivating relationships with people throughout the area.

“We like to meet community members, talk to everyone and learn about what’s going on,” he said. “Lots of us are here for three to five years, so it’s important to meet people. It helps to be able to relate to them.”
