Hot temperatures ahead in the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

A heat wave is ahead this weekend for northwest Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada is forecasting extremely hot temperatures for the next three days, with a heat warnings in place for several areas in the region. Any residents in a municipality that has a heat warning in place, or features conditions close to what prompts a heat warning, are advised to avoid staying outside for very long and stay hydrated.

The Battlefords, after reaching 29 Celsius on Friday, is looking at an average daily high of 33 C, before temps cool down a hint to 28 C next week. Evening lows will vary between 12 C–16 C, with clear skies night and day in most areas.

Meadow Lake, while currently under a heat warning, is expecting a high of 30 C on Saturday and a sharp cooling to 22 C on Sunday, where conditions could be cloudy. However, highs will then creep back up to 29 C later in the week.

This will also continue a trend of dry conditions in the region that have local fire departments keeping a vigilant eye. North Battleford deputy chief, Paul Perry, said they are prepared for the possibility of fires popping up.

“We plan for wildfires all the time, so we’re keeping an eye on things…There are some surrounding areas that have fire bans in place, I’ll have to get back to you if we were to enact them here.”

The last time the North Battleford Fire Department dealt with a wildfire was in late June, which was dealt with in minutes thanks in part to recent rainfall in the area. Perry recommended that people take precautions.

“Watch your campfires, make sure there’s no open flames, put them out properly and carefully discard cigarettes,” he said. “We just have to be vigilant with open flames and sparks.”
