Heat on the horizon to end August

Aug 29, 2022 | 5:25 PM

After a surprising burst of rain, wind, and clouds over the weekend, northwest Saskatchewan is set to get another small heatwave.

Highs of around 25°C Monday afternoon in most areas will see these conditions likely continue throughout the week. Sunny conditions, limited bursts of wind, and temperatures nearing heat warning territory are expected.

In the Battlefords, Environment Canada is predicting afternoon highs of 30°C Tuesday, 33°C, and 27°C Thursday and Friday. Meadow Lake’s current forecast has the area seeing daily highs of 28°C on Tuesday and 29°C on Wednesday, before dipping to 24°C the next two days. Overnight lows will average around 10°C.

These temperatures are well above the seasonal average for the region, with all-time records around 32°C to 34°C in the region. It is also dryer than average, though in comparison to last summer.

Following the small decrease in temperatures, the region heats up again on the weekend, with both the Battlefords and Meadow Lake expected to surpass 30°C. Right now, the highest prediction is 35°C in the Battlefords on Sunday.

Environment Canada will be issuing guidance if heat warnings are put in place this week.
