With the start of their hockey season just around the corner, the U15 AA NorthWest Stars have announced the roster for 2022-23.

Six players on this year’s team are from the Battlefords, including forwards, Finn Silver, Dawson Gamble, and Noah Bernier; defencemen, Millar Kramer and Lukamus Lehman, and goalie, Hunter Kramer.

Another five are from Meadow Lake area, with forwards, Kash Alger-East, Logan Gibb, and Owen Sinclair, and defenceman, James Norman and Easton Bauer (from nearby Makwa); and three more are from Spiritwood: forwards, Davin Hart and Brady Hujber, and goalie, Parker Schmidt.

Head coach, Kim Kramer said he’s liked what he’s seen through the pre-season and early practices with the group, coming off a pair of exhibition games over the weekend against Swift Current, who they tied 3-3, and the West Central Wheat Kings, who they beat 5-3.

“We have a big defence, and the forwards bring the energy,” Kramer said. “The forwards are feisty and we have a good mix of scoring and checking players, and it’s worked out well. We haven’t given up a lot of goals against and we’ve been able to put up a decent number on the board.”

He said seeing so many players from different communities around the area make the roster also speaks well to the development at the grassroots level throughout the region.

“We have kids from all across the northwest and it’s nice to see the Stars’ program has been working well and we’ve been able to track kids from all around the zone,” Kramer said.

“When you bring the top players out, it creates a good strength on the team and we have a good mix that’s going to make for a successful year.”

The NorthWest Stars will play their home-opener this weekend, Sat., Oct. 1 against the Saskatoon Stallions at Battleford Arena. Puck drop will be at 4:30 p.m.
