Schools return to regular operations after one evacuated, others placed in hold and secure

Lakeview Elementary School in Meadow Lake was evacuated around lunchtime Friday (Oct. 28) after police received a report of a threat to the school. Other schools in Meadow Lake went into a lock and secure mode. During a lock and secure, exterior doors are locked and regular classes continue in the school.

By 1:30 p.m. Friday, all hold and secures were lifted and Lakeview School students returned to their school. The entire series of events started earlier in the morning after police received reports of shots fired.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., RCMP received a report of the discharge of a firearm near the intersection of 3 St. West and 7 Ave. West in Meadow Lake.

As a precaution, nearby schools enacted their hold and secure procedures while police investigated. No suspects were located and schools went back to regular operations.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., police received a report of a threat to Lakeview Elementary School. As a precaution, Lakeview Elementary School was evacuated and schools throughout Meadow Lake went back into their hold and secure procedures.

RCMP officers thoroughly checked Lakeview School and found no evidence of an active threat.

Around 1:30 p.m., the Northwest School Division lifted all hold and secures and Lakeview students returned to the school.

In a Facebook post, the school division said hold and secures, and evacuations can be traumatic. Any students having difficulty can reach out to their teacher to access support.
