Vic Hospital Fundraiser

Give a Little Life Day returns to the airwaves

Dec 2, 2022 | 10:21 AM

As one of the acute care directors at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Sharon Griffin has seen firsthand how generosity can impact patient care.

She’ll have the chance to witness that goodwill one more time before she retires in the new year, through the Give a Little Life Day radiothon fundraiser Friday.

“The community has always impressed me with their generosity to support this very good cause, as well as many others,” Griffin said.

Over the last 16 years, the campaign has raised more than $8.3 million to help fulfill the hospital’s greatest needs.

“It’s helped in so many different ways– from replacing old and outdated equipment to providing brand new cutting-edge technology. It’s allowed patients to get the care they need in the centre close to home for things like surgical procedures and it’s allowed them to be done safely and efficiently,” she said.

The Victoria Hospital serves a huge area of the province with over 80,000 people, 12 First Nations, lake communities, rural municipalities, and small communities reaching far into northern Saskatchewan. In past years, funds raised from the event have enabled the Victoria Hospital Foundation to make major investments in dozens of areas like maternity and NICU, eye care, ICU, digital mammography, and endoscopy equipment.

Tammy Gillis is the nursing unit manager for the emergency room at Victoria Hospital. She said on the wish list for the ER this year are ECG machines that have wireless transmission.

“Instead of having to print out a piece of paper and fax it to the cardiologist in Saskatoon, or keep that piece of paper which is carbon – so we have to photocopy them to keep them in your chart longer term, the wireless readings of these machines can be uploaded directly to your electronic health record,” Gillis said. “It means if we’re concerned and we want to talk to cardiology in Saskatoon, they get to look at that nice clear image and not blurry lines from faxes.”

Among other needs Gillis said is a mass transfusion infuser which allows for the replacement of entire units of blood in mere minutes.

“Every little piece of equipment upgrade we can get can only benefit the community, yourself or your loved one. Most of us have used our healthcare at some point and although we don’t wish anything unfortunate happens to anybody, we want to be ready for everything that we can when it does occur,” Gillis said.

The 17th annual Give a Little Life Day radiothon runs live Friday, Dec. 2, from Mann Northway GM and will be broadcast on Pattison Media radio stations Power99 FM, 101.5 Beach Radio and 900 CKBI from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to stop by Mann Northway to make a donation, donate online at www.givealittlelife.ca or call 1-855-816-LIFE (5433) during the broadcast to make your pledge.
