Cold temperatures sticking around for Christmas across province

Dec 19, 2022 | 11:59 AM

After a couple of days with decently warm December weather, the cold temperatures are back and aren’t leaving anytime soon.

According to Environment Canada, communities like Prince Albert, North Battleford, Melfort, and La Ronge will see highs around -20 C over the next few days and during the holidays.

In fact, those wanting to avoid the extreme cold will have to leave the western part of the country.

“This big dome of cold arctic air covers all the prairie provinces and even into British Colombia,” said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Those planning on traveling for the holidays are reminded to check the Highway Hotline before leaving.

As for those hoping for falling snow on Christmas, they may be disappointed.

Lang noted the forecast is calling for sunny, but extremely cold temperatures.

“Offside chance we might see some flurry activity, but certainly things can change.”

She joked that Christmas will still be a white one, however, it won’t be a perfect one. Environment Canada’s definition of a perfect Christmas is falling snow combined with 2 cm of snow already on the ground.
