Cold temperatures hitting most communities north of Saskatoon

Northern Saskatchewan and parts of central Saskatchewan are under an extreme cold warning.

The polar vortex, which is a large area of low pressure and cold air around the north pole, is expanding which is sending cold air into the province.

Brian Proctor, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said normal temperatures around this time are usually a high of around -6 C and an overnight low of -18 C.

The next few days will be much colder.

“When we look at Wednesday, we’re looking for a max of -24 C and an overnight low of -38 C plus the windchill on top of that making it seem even colder,” Proctor said.

The good news is the cold temperatures won’t be around for too long. It’s expected to start warming up again during the weekend with highs expected to be back in the single digits next week.

However, things will get worse before they get better.

“It’s likely to get colder on Wednesday with Wednesday night and Thursday morning likely to be the coldest,” said Proctor.

Another positive for the next few days is very little chance communities experiencing the cold temperatures will see any snow.

“We probably will see some precipitation as we move through the weekend with that warm air starting to come back in,” added Proctor.

Meanwhile, communities like North Battleford and Saskatoon which aren’t under extreme cold warnings, as of Tuesday morning, will start to experience colder temperatures later in the day Tuesday and into Wednesday.
