Spring is Here

Colder than normal temperatures to start spring across Saskatchewan

Spring is officially here, but it may take some time before we start to feel like we can truly say goodbye to winter.

The temperatures for most communities in central and northern Saskatchewan will hover between zero and -10 for the rest of the month.

“There are no signs of any real warm temperatures on the way for anybody,” said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

While this is quite warm compared to the middle of winter, the highs around this time are usually slightly above zero.

Those worried that there might be one more serious cold spell before winter officially leaves us alone can breathe a sigh of relief. Lang explained it’s not a common occurrence in late March and early April.

“It’s pretty rare to see those really cold temperatures, maybe with the windchill but not the actual temperature,” she said.

Though it is possible, there’s nothing in Environment Canada’s forecast to suggest it will happen this year.

What people can expect to see is more snow.

“Warmer air can bring a lot more moisture than colder air, so that’s something we have to keep an eye on,” Lang said. “Nobody should be putting away their shovels yet.”
