Meadow Lake Pride excited to host celebrations

Organizers are getting ready for Meadow Lake Pride month celebrations to show support for the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Jo Metz, on the Pride committee, said the Pride group is not planning to hold its own walk. Instead, the group will participate in the Meadow Lake annual Stampede Week’s Western Parade at 7 p.m. on June 5, similar to last year. They will be partnering again with the Meadow Lake and District Humane Society for the event.

“We have a full month of events we are going to be doing,” Metz said. “We should be releasing the calendar soon for everyone’s knowledge, so the community can get involved.”

The Pride group held a bake sale fundraiser outside Artistic Incidents Studio on Centre Street on May 4, and raised $1,219.

Coming up, the Pride flag-raising ceremony will take place outside City Hall at 12 p.m. on June 1.

Metz said the group is considering a number of events to celebrate Pride month. The final details are still being confirmed.

Meadow Lake Pride is looking at possibly holding a trivia night, and a coffee house where people can showcase their talents.

The group also hopes to offer a games night.

There will also be a story time event at the Meadow Lake library for kids to take in.

“We have our big event at the end of the month, which is called ‘Welcome to the Gaybourhood,’ Metz said.

This event will take place at Lions Park in Meadow Lake on Saturday, June 24.

As part of the activities, in the preliminary plans, vendors are expected to be set up to sell their wares. People can also take part in a variety of games. There will also be face painting and craft making available.

As well, some food trucks will be at the site for people to grab a bite during their visit.

“It’s just a way for us to be visible in the community, and for the community to come and interact in a welcoming space,” Metz said.

The Pride group also hopes to have an Open Mic live show, where people can come and perform.

“We invite people to share a song, share a monologue – whatever they would like to do,” Metz said.

She is looking forward to all the many activities to celebrate Pride month in Meadow Lake.

“Absolutely, I’m pumped,” Metz said.
