A Saskatchewan business owner said she’s grateful to be among the finalists in a contest that supports small businesses across the country.

Kaila LeFort is a member of Muskoday First Nation who currently lives in Meadow Lake. She is the owner of Mahikan Designs which specializes in Indigenous beaded jewelry.

When she found out she was named one of the 15 finalists for the Tales to Triumph contest by Canada Post, she couldn’t believe it.

“When I got the confirmation e-mail from Canada Post confirming that I progressed to the finalist panel. I guess you could describe my feelings as pure joy and gratitude,” she said.

The Tales of Triumph contest is open to Canadian companies with less than $5 million in annual gross sales. and allows small businesses to share their stories of creativity and resiliency.

The business has only been around since November of 2022 and has a shop on Etsy, which means LeFort uses Canada Post for her deliveries. Mahikan Designs is a finalist in the Customer Connection category for the contest.

The company with the most votes will receive a $10,000 prize package.

She said winning the money for her business would mean a lot to her.

“I’m always looking for ways to move forward,” she said. “The prize packages are geared towards marketing and providing business support to the winner, so it’s a great opportunity to shine some light on my business and hopefully gain some traction to move in the direction that I envision.”

As for future plans for the business, she hopes to continue to grow and bring in more clients, something she said can be tough for any small business.

Voting takes place from now until June 30 on Canada Post’s website.
