Environment Canada issues air quality alert for northern Saskatchewan

Special air quality statements were back on Thursday morning for northern Saskatchewan due to wildfire smoke.

The new round of alerts issued by Environment Canada covers the entire northern half of the province.

“Wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility,” said Environment Canada.

“Air quality and reduced visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.”

While the smoke may be visible in central and southern Saskatchewan, the weather agency said it won’t be thick enough to cause air quality concerns in Saskatoon or Regina.

The weather agency recommends people reduce exposure to wildfire smoke where possible as it can be harmful even at low concentrations.

People who are older, who have lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, who are pregnant, or who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects.

As of Thursday morning, 30 wildfires are burning across the province, including six blazes listed as not contained.
