Central Sask. looking at warmer temperatures, but not by much

It’s safe to say most, if not all, people living in Saskatchewan are hoping for warmer temperatures.

The province continues to be under an extreme cold warning, though it appears the worst is behind us.

Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said temperatures and wind chills are already warmer than those on the weekend, but it’s still cold enough for the warnings to remain in place.

“We’re still anticipating those to be in place throughout [Monday], and then there’ll be some improvements on Tuesday. There is a chance some areas of the province might have to carry those extreme warnings for another day or so.”

Even when the warnings are lifted, it doesn’t mean people should once again store their winter jackets. Places like Prince Albert, the Battlefords, and across the northeast will continue to see temperatures in the -20s throughout the week.

“We’re going to be five to 10 degrees lower for our daytime highs and there’s still going to be enough of a wind that’s going to bring those wind chill values down into the minus 30s,” Shelley added.

The wind chill will be the biggest change. Over the weekend, some communities were projected to see the wind chill hit -55 C.

Meanwhile, some communities saw record daily temperatures over the weekend.

According to Shelly, most of them were in the southern part of the province. He explained this doesn’t mean places like central Saskatchewan, which barely saw any records, were warmer.

“A lot of those (records) are with stations that have smaller periods of records. When we look at a place like Prince Albert, that period of record goes back into the 1880s and a lot of cold records are from a period like the 1880s or the early 1900s.”

The only place in central Saskatchewan to see a new daily cold record was the Town of Spiritwood at -29 C.
