City encourages people to pay their taxes in arrears

Apr 5, 2024 | 1:42 PM

The City of Meadow Lake is asking people to step up and pay off their back taxes owing, or risk the consequences.

Council approved sending six-month tax enforcement notices for properties noted on the list provided by the city treasurer. The properties listed represent those where the property Tax Enforcement process has already begun, for arrears from 2022.

“It’s basically just the first step for the tax enforcement,” Mayor Merlin Seymour said. “There’s a process that has to be followed in order to do it. Sometimes maybe people just get a little bit behind. It’s something to put in place just to protect everyone.”

Six-month notices are issued after six months or more have passed from the date of registration of a tax lien. By passing the resolution, council authorized the city treasurer to begin the process of requesting title for these properties.

The treasurer will next send notices to all registered owners listed on the title advising them they have six months to redeem the property into good standing.

After the six-month period ends, the city may then apply to the Provincial Mediation Board to obtain title to the property.

The total value of arrears in the current listing is $174,060.

The last time the city processed six-month tax enforcement notices was May 2023 in the amount of $289,108.

The total value of arrears significantly dropped in 2024 over 2023 due in large part to property titles being taken over by the City since May of 2023, city treasurer Asma Qadri stated in her “Request for Decision” report to council.
