A woman who was raised on the trapline in northeast Saskatchewan, and who works as a tour operator, has been offered a great opportunity to represent not only her family and community, but also her culture.

Michela Carrière, 34, is among the cast members for “Alone.” Season 11 of the popular History Channel series premieres on Thursday night. Carrière, who is from Cumberland House, said she instantly became a fan of the show after first watching it in 2020.

“And when I watched it I knew I was super inspired and knew I had to apply but it took me several years to get up the courage,” she confessed.

The new season of “Alone” places ten skilled survivalists in the freezing, brutal landscape of Inuvik, Canada, within the Arctic Circle and the northernmost location in series history.

Among the items Carriere brought for the show were a duck down sleeping bag, a customized Leatherman multitool ferro and an axe. (Brendan George Ko/The HISTORY Channel)

Equipped with only ten basic survival tools, the participants face bone-chilling cold, icy landscapes, and intimidating predators including bears, wolves, and moose. Participants must forage for their own food, build shelter, and overcome both physical and mental obstacles while self-recording their journey for a chance to be the last person standing and win the coveted $500,000 cash prize.

While being raised on the trap line of the Sask River Delta, Carrière, from an early age learned bow hunting, as well as how to fish with a net.

“I’ve got a lot of family who are King and Queen Trappers so it’s in the family and it’s something I am really proud of,” she said.

In her current line of work with Aski Holistic Adventures, Carrière takes people on canoe trips, snowshoe adventures and land based culture camps. Noting the enormous support she has received from her family, she said everyone has expressed how proud they are of her.

“And a big shout out to my husband, especially while I was gone and keeping this place together,” she joked.

Season 11 of the popular series will premiere on Thursday night at 9p.m. (local time). Reiterating how inspired she was to do the show and the calling she felt, Carrière who is unable to give exact details about the experience before the show airs , just said it was something very different than she imagined.

“It’s like every emotion on the human spectrum you can imagine and its the hardest and the best thing that I’ve ever done so I am really excited for everyone to watch the show,” she said.
