The Battlefords will be well represented at the Sask. High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincial Golf Championships this weekend in Goodsoil.

A total of four athletes will be in attendance from the community, including Presley Webber from North Battleford Comprehensive (NBCHS) Vikings along with Shae Maunula, Finn Silver and Gabriella Roa-Pena from John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) Crusaders.

Sienna Sommerfeld from NBCHS also qualified but is not attending.

The tournament will be held over two days and the athletes will play two 18-hole rounds, with the lowest scorer winning the championship.

Coaches from both schools expressed their excitement and what it means to the golf community to have representation at the tournament.

“I think it’s exciting and it’s important to the community because younger people aren’t playing as seriously. So I think it’s fun and intriguing that we have at least a handful of kids who are playing competitively and have a chance to win,” said NBCHS golf coach Nevin Gloe.

“The significance is huge to be able to watch the continuation of golfers from our small community participate is amazing… so it means a lot to us as a school and as a community for sure,” echoed Renae Atcheynum, coach of the JPII golf team.

Atcheynum also said that she has high expectations for all three athletes from her school and hopes for a top-ten finish.

“Our boys are showing real promise. I know both of them compete in tournaments outside of the school, in the Sask golf program…So I do feel like our male students have a good chance of being in that top ten… and for Gabriella, she won by quite a few strokes at districts so I have high hopes for her to be in the top ten as well.”

Although both coaches would like to see their athletes excel, they said it’s the friends and experiences made along the way that matter.

“It’s a great way to meet new people and play with different people every day. And I know for myself, I have made lifelong friends and memories, so hopefully she (Webber) can just go out and enjoy herself so she keeps playing golf after this.”

“It’s good for our spiritual health, our mental health and our physical health. So I really hope they take that and realize that they are stronger mentally than they think and that they can connect with peers and build relationships that they will have all through their life.”

The SHSAA Provincial Golf Championships kick off Friday at the Northern Meadows Golf Club in Goodsoil and will have over 100 athletes participating from schools all across Saskatchewan.
