Youth arrested after threat to northern schools

One youth is in police custody after threats to two separate northern Saskatchewan schools.

RCMP confirmed they received two reports of threats towards schools starting yesterday evening. One on Sept. 25th was a verbal threat made against the school in the community of Makwa around 9:30 pm.

That was followed by a social media post at 1:30 this morning and was directed toward a school in Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation.

Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation School told students to stay home today and promised to install cameras and better lighting and increase security.

Officials confirmed to battlefordsNOW that a Snapchat post was sent to a neighbouring school showing that a possible school shooting would happen.

The mayor of Loon Lake said that schools were shut down before anyone made it inside the building.

The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in court in Loon Lake today on charges of uttering threats. He was remanded until his next appearance on Monday in Meadow Lake Provincial Court.

Loon Lake RCMP say they have engaged both schools and continue to keep them updated with progress in the investigations and add that any imminent threats to public safety will be made public.

This is the second incident of threatened or real violence in Saskatchewan schools this year. A teen in Saskatoon was injured after being lit on fire by another student several days after school started.
