Anne Duriez a candidate for ML city council

As the municipal election gets closer, a new candidate for Meadow Lake city council has made her intentions known.

Anne Duriez has spent her professional life in the service of helping others. Within her career as a social worker, she has experience working in long-term care and now works in suicide prevention.

“One of the things I’ve come to see is a lot of strength and assets within the community,” she said.

“Instead of thinking ‘We need something different then we have, how do we build on what we have and really capitalize on those strengths?’”

As someone who has lived in the community for nearly 50 years, Duriez has seen a lot of progress and change.

“I’ve always felt like each of us builds on the work that’s been done previously,” she said.

“I just feel that based on what’s already happened in Meadow Lake over the years that maybe we’re maybe ready for a bit more of a focus on how the…environment supports the wellbeing of community members.”

Referring to the community gardens and efforts to make the city more walkable and keeping those values in mind, she said the council could develop bylaws.

“I believe every council member would have their own values to bring to a decision and I think it’s collectively that we make the best decisions,” Duriez said.

Given her profession, one of the first issues the candidate has a passion for and would like to tackle is the housing situation.

“I know that that affects agencies and businesses when they’re trying to recruit people, I think housing is essential for people to have the best quality of life possible,” she said.

The candidate said though she can’t build houses, she could work to influence placing more value on variety and density of homes.

“I can’t say I would change this or that because I don’t know all of the factors that would be involved in making those decisions,” she said.

“It’s all those lenses together on an issue that helps us make the best decision possible at the time.”

Duriez said that so far, her campaign is going well and said as a councillor, she would place a strong value on working collaboratively.

“If I tackle something, I’ll do my best, doesn’t mean I’ll always get it right, but I’ll do my best.”
