Construction of the new tower at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert is progressing as scheduled.

Sask Builds and Procurement said construction is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2028.

A short, emailed statement from the ministry sent to paNOW read, “We announced the start of construction on May 10, 2024. We look forward to announcing a progress milestone in the coming months.”

No other details about the construction progress were provided; however, the ministry did supply a photo of the site.

With a price tag of $900 million, the acute care tower will require an additional 500 staff and serve the local region and northern Saskatchewan. It is expected to increase overall capacity at the hospital by about 40 per cent – up to 242 inpatient beds, with room to grow.

Developed by PCL Construction, the design includes a heliport on the roof, expanded emergency department, larger operating rooms and day surgery, pediatrics, maternity, enhanced medical imaging including northern Saskatchewan’s first MRI, lab services, a new adult mental health unit and intensive care unit. The Malhotra Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will also be incorporated into the new tower.

There will also be a First Nations and Métis Cultural space that the Prince Albert Grand Council is offering input on.
