Travel advisory in effect for Meadow Lake

Environment and Climate Change Canada has a message for anyone planning to travel to or from Meadow Lake: delay your travel.

Conditions deteriorated Friday morning prompting Sask Alert to issue an advisory about snow squalls around Meadow Lake from the Alberta border all the way to Big River. It said periods of brief but intense snowfall are expected and visibility will be rapidly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow.

“The snow fall is just a little bit more convective in nature,” said Warning Preparedness Meteorologist. Danielle Desjardin.

“That means it’s just heavier at times.”

According to the forecast, the wind was coming in from the northwest at 40 km/h and gusting to 60 km/h.

“This is kind of a mini-cold front that’s moving through so it’s quite unstable which is why we’re seeing those heavier snow showers and snow squalls and the gusty winds,” she said.

The weather is expected to ease up later this afternoon and into Friday evening. The forecast is calling for a low of -16 C with a wind chill of – 24 C this evening, before dropping off to -18 C overnight.

“It looks like pretty benign weather for the weekend: mild and not much going on to be honest,” Desjardin said.

For now though, the next few hours are expected to increase in severity and the meteorologist recommends just staying put until things clear up.

“If you do have to travel, definitely give yourself enough time to get to where you need to be. Traffic will likely be slow moving, reduce your speed,” she said.

They also advise that people carry an emergency kit in their vehicle.
