CHS Spartans football team reflects on rollercoaster season

Oct 27, 2017 | 12:07 PM

A scrimmage among teammates yesterday capped off the Carpenter High School Spartans football team’s memorable season.

It was a positive year for new and veteran players alike and saw the team’s first win in two years.

The team dynamic was a bit unique for the 2017 season, as there were a number of senior year players, but also several rookies.

Graduating players Nathan Chaillee and Josiah Griffiths said they were happy to be leaders of the squad this year.

“It was a great season, a lot of fun, good team memories,” Chaillee said. “It was great teaching all the rookies how the game works.”

“It was great being a leader of the team, knowing that the young guys are looking up to us,” Griffiths said. “It was nice being able to show leadership.”

Griffiths said he’s been playing for the last four years, and knew that this year would be a developmental one. He said he has high hopes for the program moving forward.

“I knew that we’d have some gaps to fill after last year,” he said. “I think we had a lot of really talented young players out. I think they’re going to be good next year.”

Chaillee said he was thankful for the time and energy the entire coaching staff, led by Sam Dawson, put into the team.

“The coaches were phenomenal,” he said. “They spent hours off the field, looking at film, coming up with plays.”

Dawson said the season was definitely a rollercoaster, and the scrimmage was a way of celebrating the team’s evolution this fall.

“We wanted to end the season on a positive note,” he said. “For the most part we showed a lot of growth, and it showed today.”

He said he was pleased with how much everyone worked together to learn from one another.

“The younger players really benefited from having a good group of seniors,” Dawson said. “It showed down the stretch, their leadership really pulled us throughout.”
