Hockey is a big part of Taiya Mazuren’s life, and it’s about to become bigger, as the 13-year-old Meadow Laker just found out she’ll be part of the Rivers West team to compete in the Saskatchewan Winter Games Female Tournament in North Battleford Feb. 18-24, 2018. The competitive tournament will see eight teams from across the province.

She received her invitation letter from the Saskatchewan Hockey Association yesterday after tryouts took place two weeks ago. The letter states she was chosen as one of the top players in her region, noting her performance was strong.

The Rivers West team features players from North Battleford, Lloydminster, Rosetown, Biggar, Kindersley. Mazuren is the only player from Meadow Lake on this team.

The Indigenous athlete has been playing the sport for the last five years as part of the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Program, and has also participated in a number of tournaments through Meadow Lake Tribal Council, as well the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations.
