Four dead, no survivors in head-on crash of pickup trucks in Labrador

LODGE BAY, N.L. — Four people are dead after a two-vehicle crash in southern Labrador early Thursday that left no survivors.

Road conditions were foggy when two pickup trucks collided head-on at around 7 a.m. on Route 510 between Lodge Bay and Red Bay, police said.

“It’s a pretty intense scene, I’m sure, in Labrador right now, and our members who responded are still on scene,” Glenda Power of RCMP communications said Thursday afternoon.

Both pickups were carrying two people, three men and one woman, and no one survived the crash.

Municipal staff in Red Bay and Lodge Bay said they weren’t sure whether the victims were locals or tourists.

The trucks crashed about seven kilometres from Red Bay, along a non-residential strip of highway connecting municipalities in southern Labrador.

The highway is also the roadway for travellers to and from Quebec, and for drivers travelling to and from the island of Newfoundland.

The stretch of the Trans-Labrador highway where the accident took place was paved last year. A local RCMP officer told CBC News that the force had issued an increasing number of speeding tickets in 2017 compared to the previous year after the upgrade.

Route 510 was expected to be closed from Lodge Bay to Red Bay most of Thursday.

Police, ambulance, and fire personnel were still on the scene, and RCMP analysts were en route to investigate.
